The stones here speak, because they are a part
of our past and a part of our present.
Benissa
The chapel of Sant Jaume is located in the area of Benimarco, about four kilometres southeast of the town of Benissa. Its origin is a little uncertain, since the documents in which it is first mentioned date back to the second half of the 19th century.
The chapel is adjoined to other buildings on its right side and at the sanctuary, while its left side, reinforced by solid buttresses, borders a road that separates it from the old schools.
Rectangular in shape with a simple appearance, it has whitewashed walls and a gabled tile roof. On the facade there is a linteled door above which one can see a window of the same shape. In the centre of the triangular pediment there is a sundial dated 1999 and the legend “A SOLIS ORTU USQUE AD OCCASUM LAUDABILE NOMEN DOMINI”, a quote from Psalm 113 that can be translated as "From sunrise to sunset, praise the name of the Lord". The upper part is topped by a neoclassical belfry and bell.
As for its interior, the double-sloped roof with a framework of wooden beams is supported by two pointed diaphragmatic arches. The sacristy is accessed from the sanctuary, presided over in its niche by a colourful image of Sant Jaume.
